FIRST COMMERCIAL BANK EMPLOYEE CHARGED WITH STEALING $88,000

BIRMINGHAM, AL - United States Attorney Alice H. Martin, and Carmen S. Adams, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation announce today that ATHERINE CURRY, 52, of Birmingham, was charged in a one-count indictment with embezzlement of $88,365.00 while employed at First Commercial Bank.  The maximum sentence for embezzlement by a bank employee is thirty years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or both.
“When employees use their position to enrich themselves, the system is exploited,” stated U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin.  “Those employees should and will be held accountable for violating the trust that was placed in them by their employers.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the investigation of this case, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael W. Whisonant on behalf of the government.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges.  A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
