FORMER SAMFORD FOOTBALL PLAYER SENTENCED FOR BANK ROBBERY

BIRMINGHAM, AL - MICHAEL SHERROD HALL, 21, of Lithonia, Georgia, was  sentenced by United States District Judge U.W. Clemon to 37 months  in prison on the charge of robbing the AmSouth/Regions Bank at Inverness Plaza.

On the morning of June 22, 2007, HALL entered the AmSouth/Regions Bank wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, dark colored pants, and sunglasses.  HALL approached one of the tellers and stated that he needed to cash a check.  HALL then withdrew what appeared to be a black hand gun, and yelled at the teller directing him not to move.   HALL jumped over the counter and began to remove money from the teller drawers and  moved down the line of tellers, taking money from each cash drawer.

A bank customer observed HALL initially driving eastbound on Highway 280 then changing direction and driving westbound on Highway 280.  At approximately 11:00 a.m., a vehicle matching the subject vehicle description was stopped in Georgia by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.   During an inventory search of the vehicle, more than $18,000 in U.S. currency and two (2) tracking devices were found.  The money was in three (3) separate bags.

“Robbing a bank may seem like the quick route to a fortune, but it’s a quicker route to prison,” stated United States Attorney Alice H. Martin.

HALL was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Based on HALL’s post-arrest statement, the FBI recovered the sweat shirt, sunglasses, and weapon used in the robbery.  The weapon used during the robbery is an air gun.

This case was investigated by the Hoover Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Scarlett M. Singleton prosecuted the matter on behalf of the United States.
