HALEYVILLE MAN CHARGED IN THE CB&S BANK ROBBERY

BIRMINGHAM, AL - MARK A. SMITH, 29, of Haleyville, Alabama,  has been indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with the September 6, 2008 robbery of the CB&S Bank located at 11963 Highway 157, Moulton, Alabama.

According to the indictment, SMITH robbed the CB&S Bank of $11,500.00 and was apprehended the day after the robbery.

“Thanks to the quick response of the media and the community, this bank robber is met with quick and aggressive federal prosecution,” stated United States Attorney, Alice H. Martin.

A tip was received after bank surveillance photos were broadcast by local media outlets.  This is an excellent example of how the public can play an important role in solving cases,” stated Carmen S. Adams, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The maximum penalty for bank robbery is 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000, or both.

Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the Moulton Police Department and Florence Police Department investigated this matter.  Assistant United States Attorney Alison S. Austin is prosecuting this matter on behalf of the United States.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges.  A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
