FBI AND ALABAMA BOMB SQUADS JOIN FORCES

Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Carmen S. Adams announced today that the Birmingham Division of the FBI has formed a partnership with several law enforcement agencies within central and north Alabama. As society becomes more global, the threats facing our communities are less restricted by jurisdictional boundaries. Therefore, law enforcement must be proactive in enhancing our ability to counter those threats.

In an effort to enhance public safety and our ability to respond to threats posed by improvised explosive devices (IED), and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD), the FBI is joining forces with bomb squads in central and north Alabama, including:

FBI - Birmingham Division;
Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI);
Birmingham Police Department
;
Hoover Police Department ;
Jefferson County Sheriffs Office;
Tuscaloosa Police Department;
Tuscaloosa County Sheriffs Office;
Huntsville Police Department;
Gadsden Police Department;
Florence Police Department;
Trussville Police Department

By sharing resources, expertise and training opportunities, law enforcement in central and north Alabama will be better equipped to respond efficiently to WMD threats. Because the FBI has primary jurisdiction over terrorism investigations, the FBI may have a need to request assistance from local and state agencies who maintain an active bomb squad. Such assistance may necessitate travel outside traditional jurisdictional boundaries. Therefore, local and state officers who are certified as bomb technicians through the FBI Hazardous Devices School, assigned to one of the above Alabama bomb squads, will receive federal deputization authority. This deputization will allow these bomb technicians to respond to a call for assistance from the FBI, regarding investigations falling under FBI jurisdiction.

SAC Adams stated, "The attacks of 9/11 taught us all a painful lesson; we cannot defeat our enemies standing alone. We must find new ways of doing things to defeat today's sophisticated criminal and terrorist networks. This partnership is just another example of the FBI's continued commitment to join forces and share resources with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners. It is only through partnerships, such as the one we are forming here today, that the threat of terrorism can be defeated."
