FBI VIOLENT CRIMES SAFE STREETS TASK FORCE AND BIRMINGHAM POLICE ARREST ATLANTA MURDER SUSPECT
Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Carmen S. Adams announced that Quanteria Morton, 28 was arrested without incident at approximately 6:20 p.m. last night in the 2900 block of 12th Avenue North in the Norwood section of Birmingham. Morton was not armed at the time of arrest.
The FBI received information on the possible whereabouts of Morton from the Atlanta office of the FBI. The FBI’s Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force, which is comprised of FBI agents and Birmingham Police officers immediately reacted to the information and initiated surveillance. Once Morton was spotted, Task Force members advised Birmingham Police vice and narcotics officers who were already working in the area with the Weed and Seed Program. The officers immediately responded to the scene to assist with the arrest.
Morton was arrested based on a federal Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP)
Warrant, issued out of Atlanta, Georgia. The warrant had only been issued a few hours previous to Morton’s arrest. Morton was wanted for a March 8, 2007 murder in Dekalb County, GA, where he allegedly shot an individual to death with a handgun. Detectives from the Dekalb County Georgia Police traveled to Birmingham last night to interview Morton.
Morton was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held pending his extradition back to Georgia.
SAC Adams stated: “This is an outstanding example of the ongoing collaborative efforts between the FBI and the Birmingham Police Department to make the streets of Birmingham safer.”
